Free Post #2 Communication is Key

Communication is Key

What if you found the cure to devastating disease, but you were not able to explain it to others/explain how it works? Scientists today are experiencing this problem of bad public speaking. Through trying to explain it so non-science people can understand, or that they have no communication skills that even science people cannot understand you.
Science is a very complex field to go into, so not everyone can do it. So when an every day person wants to find out what new innovations, or new vaccines that have been created they hit a brick wall. This is due to the fact either journalists with no science knowledge are reporting on these subjects usually with wrong data, or even the scientist that collected the data cannot express it to the public because they do not know how. People such as Marcus Du Sautoy main goals are to teach students in the science field public communication. So as they progress in their careers and make discoveries they are able to communicate it to the public. Research and experiments is only the half of it, your research is not complete until it is expressed to the public; an example is the drug penicillin. It was discovered in the 1920’s, but not given to the public audience until the 1940’s because the scientist never published his findings. This drug if broadcasted when discovered would have save millions of lives in WWII. Science has made giant leaps as each year passes, so communication is more necessary then ever.

After reading these articles and seeing the video, this class is ever most important to me know. My dream career path is to go into medicine, and know I know that public communication is a huge part of it know. If I want to be successful, I need to be able to talk to my patients, and publish my findings. This class will put me on the right path in order to accomplish my objectives.
