Prompt #5 Exploring Communication

I conducted an interview with one of my neighbors from my hometown; he is currently in medical school at Michigan State. He wanted to keep his anonymity. The main focus of my interview was to really find out the journey that faces me ahead as I prepare to apply for medical school.
I started off with the most common question why did you choose this field. His response was common, his sister is also in medical school at MSU, he wanted to be able to help people, and it’s the only thing that he has a passion for and can see himself doing. Going through school he was split between business and the medical field. His dad drove the business side, but the medical field is what he is really passionate about. I then asked him questions pertaining about what writing he has to do. His writing is about research he has to perform on diagnosis on certain cases, and reports he writes up on patients. His is also assigned once in a while papers on certain diseases; their discovery, symptoms, treatment etc.
I asked him about the common stereotypes involved with medical school and for the most part they were correct. He did say you will be studying nonstop, have fun now because when you are in medical school you have almost no time to go out. He did say it was very hard to get into medical school; he was lucky enough to be admitted to Michigan State’s. His white coat ceremony was probably his greatest achievement. I asked him about what degree I should pursue, his response was kind of shocking. He recommended to not go human bio since that is what everyone else is doing and you want to stick out. He recommended going after a degree that you can fall back on if you don’t get into med school. He double majored in physiology and nutrition.

Overall the interview was a success, I learned a lot that will help  me through the process and gave me that little bit of confidence that will allow me to push through those long nights of studying.
